Title: The Ethics of Accepting Funding from Controversial Organizations: A Case Study of the Sackler Family and Non-Profit Organizations

At times different organizations may want to contribute funding to non-profit organizations. Sometimes, the organizations are seemingly at odds with some non-profit agency’s missions and goals or the organization is fraught with controversy. A recent example of this is the Purdue Pharmaceutical Company, its alleged links to the opioid epidemic, and funding of various non-profit organizations. Read the 2017 article entitled The Family that Built an Empire of Pain, by Patrick Keefe that discusses the Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharmaceuticals and how they gave money to various philanthropic causes including the Museum of Art in New York City. Then read the 2018 article entitled Protestors Call on Museums to Reject Sackler Philanthropy and the 2017 article entitled Philanthropy on OxyContin: Does Charity Cleanse This Family’s Complicity in the Opioid Crisis?
Discuss the following questions:
Discuss whether large organizations, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Yale, should accept additional funding from these types of organizations and/or change the name of facilities that are named after large donors. Consider the pros and cons to this.
Now put yourself in the shoes of a small non-profit organization. Would you accept money from a controversial organization or one that is seemingly at odds with each other? Why or why not? Would it depend on the funding needs such as if the funding meant the survival of your organization?
