Hello everyone,
One subject that interests me is conflict and conflict resolution. When dealing with a conflict myself, I will try to take an outside look at the situation as unbiased as I can to determine a course of action and a possible solution. This is something that has become easier with age. I believe it is because conflict is an inevitable part of everyday life, whether it is with ourselves, friends, spouses, or coworkers. Coming across these conflicts gives us the experience required to deal with future issues, no matter how trivial.
Topic Description
If I were to conduct a study on conflict, I would be interested in looking at how conflict resolution may develop over our lives. I would ask such questions as: how would people of different ages handle a conflict? How would a child physically and verbally respond and how would an adult? Would they have the desire to resolve the issue? How could they avoid this situation in the future? Conflict resolution is an important part of our lives, and I am interested to see how people of different ages would respond.
Research Method
Natural observation would of course be the most preferable of the research methods, but trying to observe people in conflicts with themselves or others out in a natural environment would be difficult. If you asked two people to enact an argument with each other, it would not be the same as if they were home with each other and knew no one was watching them. For this reason, it may be easier to create a survey by compiling a list of questions about various events and asking people of all ages to answer them. On a survey about this matter, I would ask questions such as:
You and a friend made plans a few days ago to go to lunch. Your friend called you on the day you are supposed to meet and said they were not feeling well, so they cannot make it. You decided to go without your friend, and while out, you see them in public.
Would you approach your friend?
If so, what would you say to them?
Would you want to resolve the conflict?
If so, what would you say to your friend to try to come to a resolution?
You want to make plans with your friend to go see a movie, but they say they are too busy and will be for a while.
How would you handle this situation?
What would you say in response to your friend?
Would you want to try again in the future to make plans with them?
Your friend has said something to you that hurts your feelings.
Would you tell them you are hurt, or keep it to yourself?
How would you respond if they apologized for what they said?
How would you respond if the friend did not apologize for what they said?
Hypothesis and Expectations
I hypothesize that in situations like these, younger people and children would be less understanding. They would be less likely to confront the situation, or know how to talk through it effectively. Adults and older people may have an easier time moving past a non-major negative situation. Adults would have an easier time vocalizing their concerns and talking through it with the other party. They would give more grace and be more understanding with each other, as it would be easier to understand logical reasons as to why the conflict has risen, and how to avoid the conflict in the future.
Strengths and Weaknesses
As for strengths and weaknesses, conducting a survey on how people of different ages would handle conflict could be done in a more timely manner than any other method of research. There would be a much larger number of participants that could be reached, so this means many more responses and data. The biggest downside to this, especially with this subject, is that many people may not respond to questions with what would really happen in a real-life scenario. People may provide answers that sound kinder or how they think others may want them to respond. For ethical concerns, people may want to remain anonymous with their answers. The questions would have to be worded carefully as well, so as to not create deception or skew the answers in any way.

For your research proposal select one Independent
Variable from the column labeled independent variables (Blue in color) and 2 Dependent Variables from the column
labeled dependent variable (black in color) to use in your research proposal.
You will then need to develop 3 hypotheses (the null hypotheses are not a
hypothesis for this purpose). At least one hypothesis needs to be experimental
(includes an independent variable) and one needs to be correlational (2
dependent variables) the third hypothesis can be either type.
You will be required to write a research proposal (literature
review, methodology, and anticipated results, and reference section) using the
variables you selected for this project in this class. Your introduction will
start with your research question (why you are interested in this research) and
then citing the results of past research leading your reader to your three
hypotheses (a logical progression from the past research to your hypotheses). You
will also need to include definitions of your variables.
You will be responsible for searching the literature
data bases for past research that addresses the variables (hypotheses) you
select and their relationship to the other variables you selected (for example:
age differences in self-esteem [experimental] or the relationship between
procrastination and self-efficacy [correlational]). Later in the semester you
will be required to take a battery of questionnaire (in a single survey) to
provide data for the complete APA Paper required in the PSYC 4017. In the PSYC

Choose any topic you wish under the extremely broad heading of psychology. For topic ideas you could think about personal, leisure or career interests. Search for areas of overlap with psychology and subtopics within your subject of interest. Another way to start is to work with textbook chapter headings and subtopics within the text chapters. Find a chapter that interests you. Look for sub headings and references to previous research. The APA website as discussed in class may be a resource for topic ideas.
Additional sources for ideas will be discussed during class.
Find one peer review journal article and two additional sources relevant to the selected topic for a total of three sources. Additional sources can be any internet, magazine, or newspaper article, documentary, book, lecture, or film of a reputable nature. Identifying and finding peer review journal articles will be reviewed in class.
The writing assignment will consist of 3-4 pages summarizing and reacting to each source and a reference page. A good faith attempt to use APA formatting for in text citations and the reference page will be required. The reference page must include the peer review journal article and the two additional sources.
Any source discussed in the body of the text must be cited on the reference page and any source appearing on the reference page must appear in the body of the writing assignment.
Important: The writing assignment must conclude with an idea for additional research relevant to the topic, including a description of how your study might be conducted, or what an experiment might look like, incorporating concepts relating to research design from Chapter One. See note at the end of these instructions for where in Brightspace to find FAQ’s and tips for the conclusion.
The writing assignment must be typed-font size twelve, and double spaced. It will be graded based on content, which will include the relevance and appropriateness of sources, organization, grammar, and spelling. Grading is detailed at the end.
Suggested formats: Introduce your topic 1-2 paragraphs. Then devote 1-3 paragraphs per source summarizing the research from each source. Hold your reactions for the end. Your final page would include your reactions, ideas, thoughts, and study or experiment design as they relate to the research you found. Alternatively, react to each source as you go. Make sure to include the required idea for research at the end. You should expect to devote approximately two thirds of a page for each source.
Excluding the reference page, the writing assignment must be 3 pages, but NOT more than 4 pages.

Regardless of structure, the conclusion must include one idea for further study on this topic, and to the best of your ability, a brief description of how you might conduct a research study or experiment incorporating methods discussed in class and described in chapter 1 in the textbook.
The primary focus of the grade will be on your summaries, reactions, and idea for additional research, structure, grammar and spelling. The experiment or study design at the end only needs to reflect a basic understanding of the scientific method as applied to psychology research, and evidence of effort to apply some of the concepts discussed in class and described in chapter one.
It is recommended but not required that you submit a topic idea and information about a possible peer review article to insure you are on the right track with selections. Topics may be changed, but it is recommended that you check the new topic with your instructor. Suggested date by 3/14.

Part of conducting developmental research is reviewing and understanding published research studies. In this research project, you will choose one of the topics that will be covered in this course and find a research article in a journal on the chosen topic. Browse your text for ideas but any topic related to children or adolescents will work. Read the article and write a report about the article. Be sure to include a citation for your article (authors, title, journal, volume, pages and year). I prefer APA format but if you are familiar with a different format that will be ok too. In addition to including the main points of the study, give your personal reactions to the research findings. Again, you will need an actual research article describing a study not a review article. Most research articles are organized in the following sections: introduction, methods, results, discussion. Please complete this assignment with complete sentences in paragraph form. You may provide a brief overview of the article and then address the questions OR you may provide your overview within your answers to the questions below. Be specific in your responses.
