historiographical paper centered on a particular monograph having to do
with industrial history. Think of this assignment as an expanded book review: you will cho se a book,read it carefully, and then investigate the historiographical context in which the book was written (so,
you’ll need to examine things like reviews of your chosen book in scholarly journals, other books with
which your chosen book is in dialogue, and scholarly articles with which your chosen book is in
dialogue). In the paper, you will describe the book and its argument, lay out its historiographical context,
and then make a substantive argument about its place in the literature. To be clear: the goal here is not for
you to summarize the content of the book (though you will need to do this to some extent). Instead, the
chief goal is for you to analyze the book’s context and argument carefully.
