Exploring Film Conventions and Genres: A Critical Analysis of [Movie/TV Show] Exploring the Impact of Film and Television: A Critical Analysis

This assignment includes three steps: Step one: Choose a movie to be the subject of your essay. A few things to think about when choosing a movie for the topic of your assignment: Make sure to choose a film that you can confidently identify as fitting in one of the eleven genre categories covered in this chapter: Slapstick Comedy, Farce, Film Noir, The Western, Romantic Comedy, The Musical, Superheroes/”Comic Book Movies”, Social Issue Film, Animated Film, and Documentaries. Part of your grade is describing how the film displays the genre’s characteristics, so your assignment grade will be impacted if you do not choose a movie that fits into one of these genres. If you have questions about identifying the genre and/or choosing a movie, email me for assistance. Watch the entire film, preferably taking notes to aid in your analysis. You may need to watch the film more than once (or at least repeatedly study a few scenes) to complete this assignment. If you are having difficulty choosing a film or have any questions about the appropriateness of your choice, email me and I will help you make the best decision for the assignment. I’m requiring a movie instead of television show because it is typically easier for this assignment; however, if there is a television show you feel would be appropriate for this assignment and that you could analyze per the requirements, then choose only one episode of that show to use for the assignment. If you choose a television show, include the name of the show AND the name of the episode (or season and episode number) in your assignment so that I know which one you are analyzing. There are no time constraints (it can be from several decades ago or very recent). You can have already watched it, though this would be an excellent opportunity to watch a movie with which you are not already familiar. Step two: Review the five film conventions (sound, camera, color, time, and narrative) as well as the eleven main genres of film (Slapstick Comedy, Farce, Film Noir, The Western, Romantic Comedy, The Musical, Superheroes/”Comic Book Movies”, Social Issue Film, Animated Film, and Documentaries) mentioned in Chapter 9 of your textbook. Review your film notes and possibly re-watch some scenes to identify the proper genre with which to categorize your film. Choose one convention from the list above and observe how it is used in the movie. Step three: Type your assignment. Include the name of your film (or television show episode) in your assignment. See the assignment requirements below: Your assignment should be at least two full paragraphs: one paragraph explaining the identifying/analyzing the genre and a second paragraph analyzing use of one of the film conventions. Your assignment should be at least 300 words long. Feel free to write more than the requirement. Your assignment should contain correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. Your assignment should consist of two sections 1) Identify the genre of the film. Explain how the film exemplifies the genre you have identified (if it goes against any genre rules/traditions, you should also mention these). 2) Analyze one of the conventions listed in Chapter 9 and describe how it is used throughout the movie. Considering the following questions may assist you with your analysis: How does this movie demonstrate the characteristics of its genre? Does this movie push against the genre definition discussed in the textbook in any way? How? How does the sound/camera/color/time/narrative serve the movie? Does it move the plot along? Give the audience information? Provide critique or various perspectives? How does it influence your experience as the viewer? Must be well proofread and include the name of the movie or television show episode you are using A Works Cited page is not necessary, but you should list the name of the film in your assignment. Since you are only referring to your chosen film, the course textbook, and course PowerPoints, citation is not necessary. The Film and Television PowerPoint will not need to be cited; use the information as general knowledge. If you use any sources outside of the textbook, PowerPoints, and watching your chosen movie, you will need to include both in-text citation and a Works Cited in MLA format. Must be submitted as a PDF or a Word document through this submission folder. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. Plagiarism will NOT be accepted. The consequences are not worth it; use your own writing abilities to complete this assignment. If you need any help, contact me to set up a meeting and we will discuss how to complete this assignment.
