“Exploring the Contrast of Drama and Comedy: A Comparison of Two Films”

This week’s assignment involves watching two movies, one from list A, the other from list B. The movies in list A tend more toward the serious—i.e. dramas; list B features movies that lean toward the comedic, or at least the absurd. All films are available through the Swank streaming video database, accessible through the FSW library website. After watching one selection of your choice from each list, you will write a short synopsis of both films, and then a brief analysis of a scene from one-and only one-of the movies.
Start off with a brief synopsis of the one you aren’t analyzing. Be sure and include some details as you go, details like how the film was paced, and how the scenes and technical details contributed to the overall dramatic or comedic effect of the movie. Next, give a brief synopsis of your second film, then focus on one scene that seemed particularly effective. Get inside the structure of the scene, looking at things like how the shots are set up, how the sequence is edited (the cuts) for effect, how the lighting and direction and acting contribute. Is the scene comedic or dramatic (be mindful that a dramatic scene can appear in a comedy and vice versa)? Does the ambience or set or lighting of the scene seem to contribute to the overall effect (recall how in The Godfather interior scenes are usually dark and cavern-like, making the set feel like the underworld). Does the scene in some way join meaningfully to the broader message of the movie? Be sure and use some of the terms that have been learned in this course to give rigor to your analysis.
Post your synopses and analysis via text box, file upload or on your blog (post the link). Feel free to use any visuals that you think would help, or that might make the posting look good. Your posting should be at least 350 words. This assignment will be assessed on its formal clarity, the quality of the writing and editing, its degree of engagement with its topic, its creativity/inventiveness/originality of ideas, and the sophistication of thought it expresses.
Dramas in list A and Comedies in List B
List A (Dramas) List B (Comedies)
Moonlight
Being John Malkeovich
The Piano
Black Klansman
Arrival
Some Like It Hot
Freaks (Todd Browing)
Lost in Translation
Casablanca
Dr. Strangelove
the idea is for you to watch the films, not simply quote Roger Ebert’s critique of the film. You  need to analyze the scene yourself. If I wanted to know what Roger Ebert thought of the film, I would read his comments and not make this an assignment. Please do the assignment as it was meant to be done.

Exploring the Shocking and Challenging Art of Edouard Manet and the Avant-Garde Movement: A Historical and Personal Perspective

REQUIRED – The total of your responses to all questions must add up to at least 500 words. Please remember to cite your sources and use a proper essay format to answer the questions.
Do a little research on the start of the Modernism and the Modern Art period with the various resources provided on the Module 1 Overview page. Complete the following tasks and write up a response in your own words to the following questions:
Research the Impressionist Edouard Manet’s painting Luncheon on the GrassLinks to an external site. (Le dejuener sur l’herbe). It is housed in the collection of Impressionist art at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, FranceLinks to an external site..  Find out why his painting was so shocking for its time –  What were the rules of painting in the 1860’s and who decided on them? To answer this, pay attention to what is said in the video by the two art historians. How did Manet’s painting break with that tradition? In other words, make sure you clearly comment on the historical and cultural context for this painting.
Write your own set of standards/criteria for art and then sum it up in a personal definition of ART.
Do some research and try to find “art” that challenges your personal definition and standards. Ask yourself “Is this art according to my definition? You can also look in the Module 1 Overview area for these supplemental resources: Alex Donis, Eric Fischl’s “Tumbling Woman”, Dana Schutz, Shocking Art – Piero Manzoni, and Dread Scott, all examples of “art” that might challenge your definition and standards.  Explain your decision to accept or reject the “shocking art” you found by applying your personal definition from above.
In your own words, define AVANT-GARDE and ABSTRACT.
OPTIONAL – I also encourage you to go to the Module 1 Overview area and look for the link to the Futurist Manifesto 1909. You can read this example of a manifesto to get a feel for the type of avant-garde attitude that existed at this time.
Write a clear and reasonably intelligent answer to all of these questions in one paper of at least 500 words.

Title: Unveiling the Voice of Community: A Study of Public Sculpture

One of the traditional functions of sculpture has to do with giving culture a voice that can continue to speak through the passing ages. Public monuments and artworks become an emblem of a people and a time by expressing communal sentiments, distilling the shared aesthetic, and commemorating important individuals and events. Oftentimes, public sculpture is there to convey very specific content, content deemed somehow important to the community.
Go out into your community and find a work of public sculpture. You might find a piece at the local park, or a nearby government building. Do the work of researching the piece to discover its basic details, such as its title, the name of the sculptor, the year it was created/commissioned, and any other relevant information you can unearth.
What is the subject of the sculpture? How does the sculpture capture and express its purpose, if it has an explicit purpose (for example, a sculpture that aims to commemorate a historical event)? What does the sculpture seem to say about the community and what the community deems important? What does it say about the values of the community socially, aesthetically? Is the sculpture full round? Relief? Be sure and comment on the size of the sculpture and how it interacts with its surroundings.
Take photos of the sculpture and its surroundings, and post these along with your response via text box, file upload or blog post (link).
Posting should be 325 words, minimum. This assignment will be assessed on its formal clarity, the quality of the writing and editing, its degree of engagement with its topic, its creativity/inventiveness/originality of ideas, and the sophistication of thought it expresses.
