Synopsis: Understanding Black Women’s Graduate School Experiences at the University of Delaware in Predominantly White Institutions
This study explores the experiences of Black female graduate students at the University of Delaware, focusing on their interactions within predominantly white academic environments. Data was collected through an online survey and the Case Study Method, with insights gathered from 25 participants during the Spring semester of 2023, with 14 successfully completing the survey. The study examines demographic details, financial aspects, residence, and the significance of various factors in academic spaces. It also explores participants’ experiences with discrimination, support, and feelings of belonging. Additionally, the study investigates confidence and capability in academic pursuits, satisfaction with the university experience, and the influence of relationships, including mentorship and parental involvement. The study is guided by three theoretical frameworks: Black Feminist Thought, the Sense of Belonging-Theoretical Perspective, and Isolation and Tokenism. The variable construct groups are structured around Black Identity Development Theory, Sense of Belonging, Rokeach’s Theory of Values, Isolation and Tokenism, and the Impostor Phenomenon. Other theories that could apply to this research include black feminist thought, the sense of belonging-theoretical perspective, and the battle between invisibility and hyperinvisibility.
