Please read Chapter six of our course text, Fair Play, and respond to the following prompts. Submit your work to this folder prior to the deadline.
Describe the incompatibility thesis (yes, this will be the one in the index, and NOT the version that refers to formalism, as introduced in chapter three; also, please do not google the term and respond with something about quantitative or qualitative analysis) in your own words:
According to Simon, are intercollegiate sports, and their organizing body, the NCAA, ethically defensible? Why/why not?
According to Simon, do intercollegiate athletics help or harm the academic and educational mission of a university? In what ways?
Do athletic values always run counter-to, and thus corrupt the academic values of a university? Why/why not?
How would Simon characterize the “ideal functions of higher education” and do you think he is right? What would you add/subtract to an ideal version of a university’s mission?
What are the primary disadvantages Simon discusses regarding the professionalization of intercollegiate sports?
What does Simon identify as the primary counter-arguments to eliminating athletic scholarships?
8. How does Simon picture the potential ethical benefits that playing intercollegiate sports might have both on an individual and societal level?
