Exploring Themes in LGBTQ Scholarship: A Review of Articles from the Journal of LGBTQ Studies

For this assignment, students will get an opportunity to analyze scholarship in the broad area of LGBTQ Studies by reviewing articles–i.e., titles and abstracts–from current and past issues of one of the following scholarly journals. Choose one from the following:
1. https://www.tandfonline.com/loi/wjly20
Directions:
Each of the journals above publishes multiple issues per year. Within each issue, you will find multiple articles and book reviews. For this assignment, you are focusing only on the articles (their titles and abstracts).
Part I. For this assignment, students will:
(1) Review issues of the journal reaching back at least three to five years; the years you choose can be consecutive (e.g., 2018, 2017, 2016) or non-consecutive (e.g., 2018, 2012, 2008);
(2) Create three broad themes based on their review of the article titles and abstracts which are available for free; thus, you don’t need to read the full articles, just the titles and abstracts. (Of course, you’re more than welcome to read the full articles, if you want.) Also, it’s important to note that you’re not coming up with three themes at the outset and then trying to match up articles to each theme. Instead, you’re analyzing the titles and abstracts for articles published across three to five years and seeing, based on your analysis, what themes are emerging from the article titles and abstracts;
(3) List at least 12-15 articles either in APA, MLA, or Chicago style that speak to each theme. Note: Since all of your articles are coming from the same journal, you don’t need to include the journal title. You do, however, need to include the following information for each article: Author(s), year of publication, title of the article, volume number and issue number of the article, page range for the article, and DOI for the article.
(4) Explain in 1-2 paragraphs how the articles and themes are useful for thinking about the study of LGBTQ.
Here’s a general visual outline of this assignment:

2. Identify Theme 1
(a) List 12-15 articles related to theme 1 in APA, MLA, or Chicago style
(b) Create one to two paragraphs explaining how the theme and articles listed for theme 1 are useful for thinking about the study of LGBTQ.
