Title: Modern Surveillance Technologies in U.S. Airports: Balancing Security and Civil Rights

Briefly discuss modern surveillance technologies currently in place to screen passengers entering and transiting the United States from foreign countries.
Based on the article Intruders breach U.S. airport fences about every 10 days and look at the graph of security breaches. Link: https://www.yourconroenews.com/neighborhood/moco/news/article/Intruders-breach-US-airport-fences-about-every-10-9488878.php
a. Which city had the highest number of breaches?
b. Which city had the lowest?
c. What conclusions can you draw from this graph?
Should airport security authorities scan a passenger’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram social media postings for any indications of a potential threat to the United States? What are the ethical implications? Explain.
With the pretext of protecting society, does this level of surveillance infringe on U.S. civil rights? What checks and balances are in place to keep surveillance from going too far?

Title: “Maritime Threats and Countermeasures: Protecting Against WMD Terrorism in the Age of Technological Advancements”

Ninety percent of the goods transported around the Earth are moved by oil tankers and container vessels that travel our oceans. Crews get smaller and ships get larger as the industry adopts automation, remote monitoring, and remote navigational systems, all of which can be cyber-attacked. Researchers from the University of Texas verified that it was possible to change a ship’s direction by simulating a GPS signal to target a ship’s onboard navigation system. Imagine this scenario: A shipping container filled with chemical or biological weapons is stowed in the hold of a cargo ship, which is caused to run aground in a major U.S. port (e.g., Boston, New Orleans, or Los Angeles). There, the weapon is detonated remotely by terrorists.
Case Assignment
Examine and discuss the critically growing maritime threats brought about by advances in technology. Cite specific examples.
Outline potential countermeasures to protect both ports and ships from involuntarily participating in a WMD terrorist attack. In fact, you may find yourself inventing a countermeasure that does not exist today!
U.S. Coast Guard is only able to respond to approximately 30 percent of coastal emergencies. Today U.S. Coast Guard conducts U.S. port security assessments and analyzes security risk. Would the U.S. Coast Guard resources be better served if the local and state police departments take over this task, and permit the U.S. Coast Guard to focus on sea-based security risk emergency events? Provide an argument for and against this change.

Protecting U.S. Ports: The Role of CG-2 in Maritime Surveillance Strategies

A critical component to the U.S. Maritime Surveillance Strategies is Coast Guard Intelligence (CG-2); intel personnel are integrated at every level. Coast Guard Intelligence components bring three unique and critical characteristics to the intelligence and law enforcement communities: (1) Maritime Access, (2) Maritime Emphasis, (3) Maritime Expertise, and advances in surveillance technology. CG-2 consists of: Command headquarters, Counterintelligence Service, Coast Guard Cryptologic Group, Intelligence Coordination Center, and various Field Intelligence centers.
Assignment
Choose a port and discuss its vulnerabilities and security strategies.
Based on your reading and your own research findings, how does CG-2 provide real-time protection of coastal seaways and U.S. seaports? What additional DHS agencies does the CG-2 coordinate with?
Has technology reduced the risk to U.S. ports?

“People Drink for Different Reasons: Exploring Motives and Consequences of Alcohol Consumption”

Assignment: Read the three articles provided. Then write a 3 to 4-page (approximate length) paper (double spaced, one-inch margins) with the title “people drink for different reasons: some good some bad.” You are allowed to use other resources as well, but you need to address the following issues in your paper.
a. What is the social-learning framework and how does it apply to the reasons people drink alcohol, i.e., drinking motives?
b. What are the different types of reasons/motivations underlying why people drink?
• Describe each and give examples of the questions used to measure each reason.
c. Regarding the different reasons for drinking, are they related to different antecedents (causal factors) and outcomes?  Provide the appropriate reference for your answers (i.e., which of the studies – out of the three you were given – found the results you mention?).
d. Which of these motives seems to be the most problematic in terms of drinking-related problems?
• Do the authors of the studies suggest why drinking for this reason might lead to alcohol abuse and dependence?
e. Which motive appears to be least problematic in terms of drinking-related problems?
• Do the authors of the studies suggest why drinking for this reason is not as problematic?
f. Can you think of any other reasons for drinking (motives) that are not identified here?
• How might you measure these motives, i.e., what types of questions would you ask? Provide several example questions.
• Regarding the new motive you identified, do you think it would be maladaptive or adaptive? Explain.
HELPFUL HINT: don’t stress out over trying to understand all the information from the results sections. Focus more on the summaries of the findings in the “discussion” sections.
