“Phèdre: A Tragic Incarnation of Classical Greek and French Neoclassical Tragedy”

Racine’s Phèdre marks the high point of French neoclassicism. Consider Phèdre as an incarnation of both classical Greek tragedy and 17th century French neoclassical tragedy. Can you assign Phèdre or Theseus (or both?) the role of tragic hero? Apply both Aristotle’s view of tragedy and the French Academy’s neoclassical applications of the tragic ideal (the unities of time, place, and action; verisimilitude; and decorum) to Racine’s work.
