” For this assignment, using class lecture, the student will write a letter or letters from an imaginary Irish immigrant in the United States to their family/friend(s) they have left behind in Ireland, detailing their experience coming to the United States and their initial experiences in the United States The student will write a letter or letters from the point of view of an Irish Immigrant of the First Wave (1820-1880). Please include the following in your letter(s):
1. The Process of Immigration for your Immigrant. (Please include all steps except #6):
• Decision to Leave: motivating factors for immigration (push AND pull)
• Travel from home to Port City
• Residence in Port City
• Transatlantic crossing
• Taking up residence in city of arrival
2. Initial experiences (first job, living conditions, Church, etc…) and initial encounters with Americans and other immigrant/ethnic/racial groups.
3. Historically correct information about the Irish.
4. Information from class only (no outside sources).
