Discuss if and if and how the historical experiences of Puerto Ricans and Mexican Americans has created the ideas, concepts, tools and frames for understanding and researching the experiences of Cuban, Dominican, Colombian and Salvadoran migration and communities in the US (at least three of these!)
What questions, ideas and concepts carry over into the study of these other groups? Or do they have to be modified or extended? What parts are new and require new concepts and research? In other words, is there a common field for a “Latino History”? Are migration, ethnicity or race the organizing principles for this common framework or must we be more specific when discussing these more recent demographics?
