1. Please watch this video on how to write a literature review: https://youtu.be/ouY2FH0BKkQ
2. Examples of literature reviews:
– Dowswell, T., Renfrew, M.J., Hewison, J. & Gregson, B.A. 2001, “A review of the literature on the midwife and community-based maternity care”, Midwifery, vol. 17, no. 2, pp. 93-101.

Please refer to the UCD Library Harvard referencingguidelines-https://libguides.ucd.ie/academicintegrity/harvardstyle.  References will be submitted as a separate document. The Safety of Homebirth: Evidence and Data Supporting the Midwives Model of Care

Resource:
Cheyney, M., Bovbjerg, M., Everson, C., Gordon, W., Hannibal, D., Vedam, S. (2014). Outcomes of care for 16 924 planned homebirths in the United States: The Midwives Alliance of North America statistics project 2004-2009. Journal of Midwifery andWomen’s Health. DOI: 10.1111/jmwh.12172
Using the Cheyney, et al., (2014) study and a minimum of three additional resources, prepare a 2-3 page research paper written text (cover and reference pages are in addition) on the safety of homebirth, community birth, birth center birth or out-of-hospital birth.
The Home Birth Safety paper is a research review paper, and appropriate tone is expected. Avoid personal accounts or editorializing.
MMOC: Don’t use this paper as a compare and contrast for the Midwives vs. Medical models. The midwives model is strong, evidence-based and can stand alone. No comparison needed. Secondly, comparisons tend to take a negative tone, and I’d like everyone to avoid that in this paper.
Use additional sources- find journal articles that support the tenets of the model- like pregnancy and birth as a social, sexual, holistic event in a person’s life, benefits of continuity of care, the expertise of midwives for healthy, normal pregnancies and births.
Be sure to connect your points to physical safety (morbidity and mortality), and use evidence that supports the physical safety of home birth, however, not just that it is empowering, emotionally safe, spiritual, etc. As your syllabus says, birth stories are not scholarly.
Support your claims! Support your claims! Support your claims! If you say midwives do this, or midwives don’t do that, prove it by including data and statistics that show it!
Your audience is someone who does not know about the midwives model, so explain it clearly and thoroughly.
These papers are really your opportunity to perfect speeches you will give at least a million times in your career.
Successful papers will include:
APA style (cover page, in-text citations and a reference page)
a minimum of 4-5 references; feel free to include more
AI should NOT be used in the writing of this paper.
Discussion of factors that make out of hospital birth safe, including continuity of care and low intervention
