“The Cinematic Mastery of Martin Scorsese: A Critical Analysis of ‘Goodfellas’ (1990)”

Parameters:
– Papers should be 3-5 full pages (3 full pages minimum). The bibliography, cover page, header, and any graphs, images, or appendices do not count toward paper length.
– The body of the paper should have a one inch margin on all four sides, be doubled-space, and use a standard font style (such as Times New Roman, Courier, or Arial) and font size (11 or 12).
– Citations should be provided in the body of the paper in a consistent style and a bibliography should be included. Please check a citation guide for how to cite a film (this should not be an IMDB or YouTube citation).
– At least three quality sources should be cited. (These should not be Wikipedia, IMDB, other undergraduate essays, or a an essay mill site. Part of what you should be learning at college is how to identify credible sources, an essential life skill).
Paper Prompt: View a feature film made between 1970 – 2000 you have not seen before (nor will see later in this class) by a great director. Some options include Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Barbra Streisand, John Cassavetes, James Cameron, Charles Burnett, Ang Lee, Chantal Akerman, Nora Ephron, and Pedro Almodóvar. These are suggestions, but not a comprehensive list of possibilities.
Comment on the specific film you saw. Pay particular attention to the camerawork (cinematography), the editing, and the sound (this can include the music). What is one theme or message the film is portraying? How are the filmic elements used to create this message? A strong thesis statement in your introduction should state your overall argument about the film. You should comment on the film both as a representative of its genre and as a film. Use readings from class or that you have discovered on your own to support these views.
