“The Evolution of Science and Technology: Exploring the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions”

Instructions
Once again, you will write a guided essay on one of the following topics. Use the McClellan and Dorn text as your starting point and effectively use at least one other scholarly source. Use what you learned in Essay 1 for identifying quality resources.
As you choose a topic, remember these broad dates to frame the various time periods:
Scientific Revolution: 16th and 17th centuries
Industrial Revolution: 18th century
Second Scientific Revolution: 19th and early 20th centuries
Topic Choices:
A) Discuss how the Scientific Revolution began in astronomy but quickly spread to physics.
B) Explain some of the reasons given during the Scientific Revolution for the utility of science.
C) What economic factors led to the inventions necessary for the Industrial Revolution? Did scientific theories play a role in these inventions? What are the main features of what McClellan and Dorn call “Industrial Civilization”?
D) How was theoretical science applied to engineering and industry in the late 19th century (during the Second Scientific Revolution)? How did this application differ from the relationship between science and technology during the Industrial Revolution?
Important reminders: use the generally accepted dates for the Scientific Revolution and the Industrial Revolution as we focused on them in Weeks 2, 3, and 4.
Guided Essay:
1. Start with an introduction: this should be at least 3-5 sentences that summarize the main idea behind your essay. You will identify which topic you selected and make your main point.
2. Next you move into the body of your essay. Here you will write at least 3 paragraphs that outline specific evidence supporting your main point.
3. Finally, wrap it all up in a nice conclusion. This will be at least 3-5 sentences that summarizes your main point and evidence. Do not just repeat your introduction or use exact sentences from your body paragraphs.
4. Finish with references! Now that you’ve had some practice with APA formatting, be sure to provide references in that format. Refer to Essay 1 if you still need help with this.

Title: The Impact of Social Context on Twentieth-Century Science and Technology: A Case Study of [Chosen Development]

Instructions
For the final essay in this course, you will write an essay focused on an important development in twentieth-century science or technology that impacted society. Write an essay on this development that covers the four parts described below. Remember to use the skills you developed in Essay 1 and Essay 2 to include all the required sections of an essay, including references. You may choose any development in the twentieth century, even those in disciplines we have not yet covered as a class.
Part I: thoroughly explain what the development was. Someone who has never heard of the development you chose should be able to understand your explanation.
Part II: explain how your chosen development was shaped by its social or cultural context and how it, in turn, affected society.
Part III: get you sci fi on! Imagine that your chosen development had emerged from a different social or cultural context, or with a different representative population. Discuss how this imagined context would have changed the development’s effects on society and/or other STEM fields.
Part IV: what does the scenario you discussed in part III tell us about the social context of STEM research? Does it suggest any changes that we could make to reap more benefits from STEM going forward?

Title: Timeline of Scientific Advancements: From Ancient Sciences to the Information and Space Ages

1. Create a timeline and add 5 events to the timeline from the time period “Ancient Sciences,” as defined in this class. The events should cover a wide range of sciences, technology, math, and engineering (i.e., they can’t all be mathematics related or all astronomy related, etc.).  In each major time period, you will need to identify and describe at least one event that is attributed to a member of an underrepresented population (female or minority). Each entry needs a date and a 4-5 sentences describing the event, its significance, and a connection to its social context.  You will share one of these events in the forum this week as well. One of the topics for these five I chose Euclids Elements.
2.Add 5 events to your timeline from the Scientific Revolution time period, as defined in this class; these should cover a wide range of sciences, technology, math, and engineering (i.e., they can’t all be mathematics related or all astronomy related, etc.). Each entry needs a date and 4-5 sentences describing the event, its significance, and a connection to its social context. Remember that you will need to identify and describe at least one event that is attributed to a member of an underrepresented population (female or minority). You will share one of these events in the forum this week as well. Be sure to keep a list of sources used in creating your timeline sources and continue to work on APA formatting of those.
3. Add 5 events to your timeline from the Industrial Revolution time period, as defined in this class; these should cover a wide range of sciences, technology, math, and engineering (i.e., they can’t all be mathematics related or all astronomy related, etc.). Remember that you will need to identify and describe at least one event that is attributed to a member of an underrepresented population (female or minority). Each entry needs a date and4-5 sentences describing the event, its significance, and a connection to its social context. You will share one of these events in the forum this week as well. Finish with your resources: by now, you should be able to provide them in APA formatting.
4.Add 5 events to the timeline from the “Rise of the University” time period; these should cover a wide range of sciences, technology, math, and engineering (i.e., they can’t all be mathematics related or all astronomy related, etc.). Remember that you will need to identify and describe at least one event that is attributed to a member of an underrepresented population (female or minority). Each entry needs a date and 4-5 sentences describing the event, its significance, and a connection to its social context. Be sure to keep a list of sources used in creating your timeline: sources in the final timeline should be in APA format.
5.Add 5 events to the timeline from the “Information and Space Ages” time period; these should cover a wide range of sciences, technology, math, and engineering (i.e., they can’t all be mathematics related or all astronomy related, etc.). Remember that you will need to identify and describe at least one event that is attributed to a member of an underrepresented population (female or minority). Each entry needs a date and 4-5 sentences describing the event, its significance, and a connection to its social context. Be sure to keep a list of sources used in creating your timeline sources: sources in the final timeline should be in APA format.
Complete your timeline if you have not previously completed it. Be sure that each entry has a date and required description and be sure that there are events from each area (Science, Math, Technology, and Engineering) represented on the timeline. You will share your completed timeline in the Week 7 discussion board.
2. Create a short video walkthrough of the timeline using any recording software that you would like. (Screen-cast-o-matic, YouTube, etc.). The video should be 4-6 minutes in length.
