Reflecting on the Grant Writing Process: Lessons Learned and Professional Applications

A grant writer will regularly reflect on decisions made during the grant writing process to determine how to improve for future projects.
The process of applying for a grant is arduous and tedious. A grant application pulls together both the quantitative aspects of your project, such as the budget and timeline, and the qualitative description of your goals and outcomes. Not all grant proposals result in success, but when they do, they can serve as examples to inform future decisions. In this discussion, you reflect on the process of creating a grant application and the professional applications of the skill of grant writing.
Choose one of the following prompts to respond to:
How might understanding the grant writing process be helpful to you in your career or to your organization? Which personal strengths helped you during this process? Which skills might you need to develop to grow as a grant writer? How might you explain your understanding to an employer who asks about your grant writing experience?
What are your reflections on the overall process of developing a criminal justice initiative to address a problem, finding a funding source, and writing a grant application? Which professional organizations offer resources to aspiring grant writers? What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a grant writer?

Title: Planning for Success: Developing a Timeline and Project Management Plan for a Criminal Justice Initiative Grant Proposal

Homework Content
As an old saying goes, “Plan the work and work the plan.” Every successfully funded initiative starts with a well-thought-out plan of action that shares with the funding agency the vision for accomplishing the work. This component of a grant proposal is a plan aligned with project goals and objectives that outlines the activities that will need to be completed, as well as identifies the people and time needed for success. Planning these resources will help you as you build your budget.
In this assignment, you develop a timeline of activities and a project management plan of the resources involved with the project. You will include these components in the Wk 5 Summative Assessment: Grant Proposal.
Assignment Deliverable
Write a 525- to 700-word summary of the plan for accomplishing your criminal justice initiative as if you were a grant writer seeking approval from the Chief or other designated officer for including the plan in a grant proposal.
Create a timeline of key activities and tasks for the initiative. You may use a list, a table, or a spreadsheet to show the items in the timeline. Include the following for each activity or task in the timeline:
Determine the duration of the individual activity and any sub-activities.
Allocate a key staff individual or key staff role to the activity and identify any relevant partnerships or collaboration associated.
Denote materials or resources needed for the activity or task.
Submit your summary and timeline for your assignment.
