Defining American Literature: A Journey Through Different Movements and Voices

What is American Literature? From American Romanticism to Modern Comedy, you have studied a wide breadth of American Literature this semester. You have read novels, short stories, and poems. Now, you have to answer this question based on all of your acquired knowledge. What is American Literature? What features must a work have to be considered a part of the canon? What makes something quintessentially that enigmatic thing called “American Literature”? Over the past months, you have written weekly journal posts to attempt to formulate a definition of what American Literature is. Now, I want you to bring together all your work and write an essay that defines what you think makes a work a piece of American Literature. To do this, you will look back on the posts you have written. Take from those posts what you think are a definitive list of characteristics of American Lit. Then, provide evidence from the works you have read to support your argument(s). Close read the primary texts that you choose. I want you to quote from the texts and explain how those quotes prove your arguments. 1500-2000 words MLA format (Make sure you cite your sources to the best of your ability.) Formal writing (no contractions, no slang, etc.) You MUST use at least 5 works we have encountered this semester as evidence. These works must be from 5 different movements or units. I want to see that you have read and understand a full breadth of our materials this semester. I do NOT want you to use any sources other than the primary texts that we have read this semester. I want to know your analysis and your thoughts. Due: 28 April 2024 This is a firm deadline. I have to turn in grades and grade your finals. I will not accept late essays. Course Concepts and Skills: Reflection and Application Introduction: Throughout the first three weeks of the course, I have encountered various course concepts and communication skills that have resonated with me. These concepts and skills have been introduced through various mediums such as textbook

I’m ATTACHING A ESSAY I WOULD LIKE YOU TO REWRITE IN YOUR OWN WORDS. ALSO HERE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENT: Write one page, for each set of prompts below. This should equal three pages! Describe a course concept or communication skill from the first Three weeks that stuck with you. Identify where you encountered this concept or practiced this skill (examples: textbook chapter, speech discussion post, from a classmate, powerpoint). Define the concept or skill in your own words. Explain why this concept or skill was meaningful to you. Find a job posting in a career area that interests you and analyze how a 2nd skill or concept might be useful in that career. How might that job require the potential employee to utilize a skill or demonstrate knowledge learned in this group of chapters? Explain the skill in detail and describe how it would be useful for that job. Once again, identify where you encountered this concept or practiced this skill. Select a 3rd concept or skill from the last three weeks of the semester and explain how you might apply it to your current personal or professional life. The Effects of Isolation and Tradition in ‘A Rose for Emily’ by William Faulkner: A Close Reading Analysis

Choose a primary text and a secondary text from our list of readings. Then, make an argument based on what you’ve read. At this point in the semester, I want you to practice how to create your own arguments and back those arguments up through close reading of the primary text and using evidence from secondary sources. First, make an argument about the primary source. This argument will be a sentence that looks like a thesis statement. Next, use the primary text and the secondary source to provide evidence to prove your argument. You will need to both close read the text and use the secondary source. You may agree or disagree with the secondary source. Demonstrate your ability to close read. Close reading means you will make an argument and prove it with quotes from the text that you pick. Avoid generalizations. Get specific. Pick out specific moments in the text.
