“Exploring High-Quality Sources in the Excelsior Library: A Team Discussion”

Initial Post: Due Thursday
Response Posts: Due Sunday
In this team discussion, you will practice the library research techniques discussed in the M2.2 module notes in order to gain experience finding high-quality sources in the Excelsior Library.
Step 1: Identify a topic that you would enjoy researching. This can be a topic from
your work, your college major, or just something that you find interesting. It should be a topic that has been studied by academic researchers. Otherwise, the library might
not have any resources on it.
Step 2: For the topic you selected, find one of each of the following types of sources:
An e-book
A peer-reviewed journal article
A reference article
Step 3: In an initial post, list the author(s) and title of the sources you found along with a perma-link to the source page in the library. (Click on the Permalink button to the right of the library catalog entry, then copy and paste the link into your post. See the illustration on the right.)
In your initial post, you should also write at least 150 words per source evaluating the quality of the sources you selected. Explain your reasoning using the criteria in the “Evaluating Information” section of the module notes.
Step 4: Reply to the posts of at least two of your team members. In your replies, provide your own thoughts on the quality of the sources they have selected and the reasons they provided for evaluating the sources as they did.

The Impact of Nutrition on Mental Health: Exploring Interventions and Strategies for Promoting Well-Being

Final Paper Preview
Length Requirement: 1000 word minimum
Points: 400
Purpose
The most common assignment in college classes is the research paper. Research papers tend to fall into two categories—the argumentative and the informational. You will practice putting together a research paper that is more informational in nature. Its main goal is to practice assembling sources in a way that adequately explores a research question from various sides but does not (necessarily) take a strong stance on the “correct” answer. The paper can lean in certain directions if that is where the scholarly conversation leans, but it is not necessarily trying to persuade the audience of one specific point of view. The point of the paper is to assemble a scholarly conversation around a research question and then synthesize possible answers to the research question.
In summary, the steps you will have gone through are as follows:
Identify and narrow a research question. (My research question is provided in  “My Topic”)
Find and evaluate sources. (Please use internet & library research log provided in attachments)
Summarize sources in an annotated bibliography.
Write a rough draft.
Revise a rough draft and proofread.
Task
Compose a 1000-word essay in APA citation style (you may use MLA if you are an English major) that presents and then attempts to answer your research question.
You must use a minimum of five cited sources. Three must be from peer-reviewed academic journals. Popular sources, including magazine articles, newspapers, secondary scholarly summaries of topics, or government or institutional literature may be allowed if deemed appropriate as per the lessons on source evaluation and rhetorical needs of the paper.
Cite your sources on a standard format APA reference page.
Submit your paper as a Word document, .pdf file, or a .rtf only. Please do not use Pages or any type of image file.
My Topic:
How does nutrition influence mental health outcomes, and what interventions or strategies can be implemented to promote better mental well-being through nutrition?
Important Note
Do not use generative AI programs (Chat GPT, Bard, Bing, Blenderbot, etc.) to write this paper. It will be considered academic dishonesty and the paper will receive a failing grade. We have software to detect use of AI programs to generate papers.
NOTE: I have also included screenshots of the rubric. Most importantly, I have uploaded screenshots of documents I’ve submitted and received credit on regarding this topic; library & internet research logs and a questions log that pertain to my specific research question. Please use these to help with the format and references when writing my essay. Thank you!

“The Impact of Minimum Wage Increases on State and Local Economies: A Comprehensive Analysis”

Put together a research paper that is more informational in nature. Its main goal is to assemble sources in a way that adequately explores the research question “How have minimum wage increases across the U.S. impacted state and local economies?”, from various sides but does not (necessarily) take a strong stance on the “correct” answer. The paper can lean in certain directions if that is where the scholarly conversation leans, but it is not necessarily trying to persuade the audience of one specific point of view. The point of the paper is to assemble a scholarly conversation around a research question and then synthesize possible answers to the research question.
Task
Compose a 1000 to 1250-word essay in APA citation style that presents and then attempts to answer your research question.
You must use a minimum of six cited sources, no older than 2017. Four must be from peer-reviewed academic journals.
Cite your sources on a standard format APA reference page and at the end an Annotated Bibliography with a minimum 100 words each annotation. Each entry should start with an APA reference citation for the source. It should be followed by an annotation that provides a brief summary of the source and an evaluation on how the source might be useful.
Submit your essay as a Word document, .pdf file, or a .rtf only. Please do not use Pages or any type of image file.
Tips
Questions for the introduction should help set up the main question. They often determine terms or outline the debate.
Body paragraphs answer part of the research question.
You will want to articulate three specific main ideas – ex: income gap disparity, access to services & goods, percentage of people living near or below the poverty line, lay-offs due to increases, etc.
Be sure to avoid being redundant.
Conclusions sum up main points, identify gaps for further inquiry, or ask about possible new directions or development on the topic.
Evaluation
Research question is exceptionally refined. It is narrow and fills a needed gap in the academic conversation.
Sources Meets all requirements. Sources exceptionally relevant to research question. Shows exceptional dedication to finding just the right source.
Exceptional sources that are current, balanced, scholarly, and relevant to research question. Selection of sources creates a productive conversation.
Sources incorporated impeccably with good judgement. Sound composition fundamentals in paper writing. Flawless APA citation, grammar, and style.

Evaluating Websites for Credibility: A CRAAP Analysis of Sources on the Impact of Music on Emotions

Module 5 goes over how to evaluate websites and what separates credible websites from not so credible websites.
Your Assignment
You will explain why you have determined that the source is either “good” or “bad.” Bold the use of CRAAP criteria throughout the two paragraphs.
We are now half-way through the course! We will now start focusing on completing work for the final assignment. We will start by locating a website that we could use.
For this class activity, you will locate five websites on the topic you established in Module 2(Can a song change a persons emotions?). Do a brief CRAAP analysis for each. Based on the information you found in the websites, (make sure that this is not a journal article published electronically on the Internet), re-work your initial topic from the Module 2 TSD into a solid research topic.
