Title: “Exploring the Relationship Between Blood Lipids of Obese Mothers and Low Birthweight: A Correlation and Regression Analysis”

Students will demonstrate understanding of the application of correlation and regression to address public health questions and discuss how the correlation is similar and dissimilar with regression. How are these statistical methodologies used to measure association between two variables? Students will analyze the following scenario: A researcher believes that there is a relationship between blood lipids of obese mothers and the low birthweight of their newborn. Students will discuss the most appropriate statistical approach to test this hypothesis. Is there a cause-and-effect relationship? Students will interpret the results by answering the following questions: Is there a correlation to your findings that can influence public health decisions?  How do your data findings influence decisions of the researcher versus the mother?  For example, will the mother modify her lifestyle for the health of the baby based on the findings?  Will this help public health officials in providing guidance on policies for expectant mothers in the future?  Why or why not?

Title: Household Survey Analysis of Heart Disease Prevalence in a High-Risk Township

Household Dataset
For this assignment, students will complete Two Sections: Section One: Quantitative Analysis AND Section Two: Qualitative analysis.
As a public health personnel, students will conduct a survey and collected economic and health data on households in a township that is known to have a high prevalence of heart disease. Before, you proceed with the data analysis be sure to review the video (https://assets.adobe.com/link/a8cb7f94-8dda-4f44-5265-439bf9af35ef)  for additional instructions and relevant facts. To complete this lab assignment, students will use SPSS’ latest version describing results about heart disease. The Household Data file (attached below) contains data for 100 households surveyed including race, household income, family size, home price, number of bedrooms, and family history of heart disease. Analyze the 100 survey (basic statistics) and
address the questions outlined in the video presentation. Hint: Let the questions drive the necessary analysis. You may need to perform a regression, correlation, or proportion analyses.
Provide an answer for each question in the matrix listed below using HouseholdData.xls. Upload the completed template using the assignment link. You must use the lab template attached to this assignment. Provide at least one graph, chart, or figure to support your findings. For example, number of bedrooms per household
Section One. Quantitative Analysis: Analyze the data and statistics calculated for the community.
1. Construct and submit the table below using a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of households with a history of heart disease, separately for each race. Would you say the proportion of households with history of heart disease differs by race? Hint. Confidence interval (CI) = p ± z(SE) where standard error (SE).
2. Provide SPSS code used to generate results for the Prevalence of Heart Disease table. Submit the table below with your results. You must provide the SPSS code along with your output.
Section Two: Qualitative Analysis: Using the Excel file column entitled “Patient Symptoms”, complete the following steps:
1. Create themes based on the organ system affected – for example, chest pain would be related to cardiovascular system, stomach pain would be related to gastrointestinal system, etc. You may look up common symptoms for heart attack as well.
2. Categorize the symptoms reported by each research participant according to the indicated themes.
3. Determine the counts and proportions of relevant symptoms according to the various themes and identify the most relevant theme.
4. Analyze your results to determine the numbers and proportions of subjects with a history of heart disease that had previous symptoms
5. Summarize and present your results using Tables/bar charts. Comments on your results.

“Selecting the Appropriate Statistical Test: Considerations for Hypothesis and Data Type” Title: “Selecting the Appropriate Statistical Test: Considerations for Hypothesis and Data Type” Hypothesis: There is a significant difference in

In terms of selecting a statistical test, the most important question is what is the main study hypothesis? The next question is what types of data are being measured? The test used should be determined by the data.
Each student should formulate a hypothesis and determine whether or not parametric or non-parametric statistics are needed to test your hypothesis. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of parametric versus nonparametric statistics in answering your questions.

Title: Statistical Analysis of Gulf War Syndrome Prevalence in U.S. Military Veterans

Many veterans of the Gulf War report debilitating illnesses that are unlike any described in medical textbooks. Can statistical methods be used to test what is going on here? Review the data presented in the attached peer reviewed  manuscript entitled Prevalence of Gulf war veterans who believe they have Gulf war syndrome: questionnaire study (see attachment below).

Respond:
Identify methodology, data collection and discuss in a statistical content (i.e., probability, frequency) the results of this paper.
Explain and analyze the effectiveness of the statistics methods to determine the impact of Gulf War syndrome on U.S. Military Veterans.
Based on this paper and any additional resources (.i.e, cite sources), address whether or not current support the prevalence of Gulf War Syndrome.
