“Controversy and Solutions: Addressing a Pressing Issue in Society”

in this essay, you will take ownership of your own topic, identifying a problem you think needs to be fixed and proposing a specific way of solving that problem.that has controversy attached to it–this is so that you can map the controversy and craft your own argument. The problem you are identifying needs to have created some discussion in the field (this will help you do your research—discussion/controversy means lots of sources!). Note: you CANNOT write on food-related topics or cover any material you covered in previous essays; this is your opportunity to explore something entirely new!you will craft an essay that introduces the topic adequately, maps the controversy around the topic with clarity and fairness, and then advocates for a specific course of action related to the topic. Even though you will be making a specific argument, like all formal work in this course, you will maintain neutrality–no use of “I” or other first-person references. For this essay, you will need a total of EIGHT reputable research sources about your topic. These sources should be balanced–you should reference at least two or three sources on one side of the controversy and at least two or three on the other side. These sources can be newspaper articles, federal or state websites, organization websites (if you were writing about education and standardized tests, you could reference the Department of Education, the ACT website, etc.), or other credible sources that use facts and research to support their arguments. You will also need at least ONE source from a peer-reviewed, academic source found through the Delta State Library database. The finished essay must be between 1800-2200 words. As always, you should follow MLA style guidelines and must provide a complete and correct Works Cited page with the finished draft. You must use Times New Roman 12-point font, 1-inch margins. You will also provide two annotations with this essay; you must annotate your required academic source and another source
