Title: “Sundiata and the Power of Africana Literature: Decolonizing, Empowering, and Liberating Minds”

An outline example is attached. Please disregard the prompt on it and use the following one:
“Consider how Sundiata is used to decolonize, empower, and liberate minds. In the “Preface” of her text, Transcendence and the Africana Literary Enterprise, Dr. Temple asks how, “can we increase the life chances and life experiences of people of African descent, in particular and of humanity”? (pg. 5). Additionally, in the “Conclusion” she poses an important question for us to consider: “What do we do, after we read?” (pg. 194). Therefore, how do we use literature to improve ourselves, our families, our communities, society in general, and the world, at large?
Students may respond to this prompt using any combination of Africana literatures that have been reviewed this semester to response to the final essay prompt. MINIMALLY, students must include at least 2 different sources (proverbs/poetry/novels/folktales) to contextualize their response.”
Also attached are screenshots of the readings we have been over that can be used. Please let me know if you need a copy of the full reading.

The Function and Purpose of Oral Tradition: A Precursor to Written Literature

In a brief, 4 – 5 double spaced page essay, discuss the function and purpose of the oral tradition as a precursor to written literature via the griot and the use of proverbs and folktales. In addition to including a thesis statement, students should MINIMALLY include three (3) direct quotes from any Unit 2 materials to support your thesis (Udoidem, Alkebulan, Offodile, or Wa Thiong’o). Students may refer to the YouTube clips on Canvas; however, they will be viewed as supplementary/ ADDITIONAL sources to support your overall thesis. When referencing any of the Unit 2 readings from Alkebulan, Offodile, Udoidem or Wa Thiong’o, students are expected to explain each direct quote in addition to identifying the author in support of the overall thesis. Students should submit a coherently written, well organized and revised/edited essay. Students have plenty of time to complete this assignment, therefore, late assignments will not be accepted. Textual evidence means DIRECT QUOTES from the readings. Summaries/paraphrases will not garner full/any credit. Students may use either MLA or APA for citations based on their level of comfort. I do not have a preference; however, whichever format students use, there needs to be consistency throughout the essay. Students are expected to submit an individually written essay, 4 – 5 double spaced, APA OR MLA formatted, Word document, using Times New Roman font, having 1inch margins, in size 12pt. Students should include a Works Cited/Bibliography page at the end of the essay.
