Exploring Views on Children’s Development and the Role of Play in Preschool Education

On page 18, the author explains the two views on children’s development while making arguments for both: empty vessel and active child views of children’s development.  What are
your views on the implementation of one or both viewpoints in preschool education?
Paige G.
Page 27 in the text talks about how play and learning are not incompatible. The text says, “There is room for real instruction that is playful.” Can you think of a time in elementary school when your teacher instructed you to do a play-based activity that enhanced your learning on a topic?
In the text page 27 talks about how many states have implemented universal preschools. These preschools are state-funded so that any child who wants to can attend. Do you think that it should be a requirement for children to attend preschool?
Peter V.
Page 30 also states “The advanced language capabilities that emerge in play with peers offer not only a window into children’s growing competencies but also a link to literacy.” If your child’s best friend speaks another language besides English, are you willing to let them learn a new language to match with your kid’s best friend?
Page 32 mentions “Research also demonstrates that playful learning with adults contributes to the acquisition of literacy skills”. How can impatient parents keep a good attitude when helping kids work on schoolwork or play games with them?
