“Assessing the Success of Cold War Policies: A Reflection on Key Conflicts and Alternative Approaches”

After winning World War II, few would have guessed America would so quickly face another conflict, especially with a nation whom only a few months earlier was an ally. Blame for the start of the Cold War is beyond this course’s scope. However, the policies created to wage it are not. Those policies included a massive military buildup, containment, and direct involvement in several conflicts under the mantle of preventing the spread of communism. We won the Cold War so the policies can at a minimum be deemed at least partially successful. Would you consider the examples below successful and would you have handled them in a different manner:
The Berlin Blockade (1948-9)
The Korean War (1950-1953)
The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)
The Vietnam War (1954-1973)

“Strategic Choices in the Pacific Theater: Evaluating America’s Campaign in World War II”

After six months of constant defeat, America scored an historic victory against Japan at Midway in June 1942 and then launched its first offensive in August at Guadalcanal. After a victory there and at Buna in New Guinea in January 1943, a strategic debate evolved between those desiring an island-hopping campaign across the Central Pacific and those preferring an advance across the northern coast of New Guinea to the Philippines. The Central Pacific drive was endorsed by Pacific Fleet commander Admiral Chester Nimitz, the Philippines option by Southwest PACIFIC Area Commander General Douglas MacArthur. Evaluate the American Pacific campaign of World War II.  Which approach do you find better suited America’s vast capabilities at this time?
