Title: Understanding the Key Components of E/M Services and Categories in the Evaluation and Management Section

Part 1- Understanding the three key components that are used to properly identify the correct E/M level of service is essential for you to know as a medical coder. Reimbursement and compliance are closely tied to our accurate knowledge and expertise and these are the main elements of the job! For this discussion, consider your three key components: history, examination, and medical decision-making as you respond to each prompt.

There are many types and places of service found within this CPT section. As a coder, it is essential that you fully understand what services are captured including the many categories and sub-categories located in E/M. As a coder, you will be called upon by your providers and others based on your expertise in this area.
