“Exploring the Dark Heart of Imperialism: Racism and Dehumanization in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness”

The novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, is seen as a classic work of modernist literature and has been analyzed by many readers. The most common themes presented in the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, is the exploration of imperialism, greed, cruelty, uncertainty and how it has an effect on the other characters.  Although the novella was a success and has captivated the world, there are some who believe Conrad’s novella shows that he is a racist. Chinnua Achebe and Hunt Hawkins both believe “Much of Heart of Darkness dehumanizes Africans” as well as “the image Conrad projects of African life can hardly be called flattering,”
