Its origins are traceable to historical legacies, such as the implementation of slave patrols, black codes, and Jim Crow laws during the 19th century. The persistence of racism within policing throughout history has cultivated a legacy of animosity and mistrust within the black community, as it pertains to police and policing. Today is no different; because of the continued prevalence of police brutality and systemic racism in contemporary American policing animosity, mistrust, and an overall disdain continue to remain high within black communities showing no signs of easing.
