The purpose of the final paper is to demonstrate what you have learned in this course by analyzing an organization’s response to a crisis. It is worth maximum 50 points, or 20% of your grade. Select a crisis which made headlines in recent years and was not handled well by an organization. You cannot use examples from lectures, videos, or Crisis Ready book for this assignment. Gather all pertinent information about the crisis, critically evaluate it, and discuss the following questions:
1. Background. Provide factual information about the crisis. What happened? How did the crisis come about? In your description, focus on the important information and omit needless details. What made the situation a crisis rather than an issue for the organization? How did it affect its reputation?
2. Stakeholders. Who were the key stakeholders and how were they affected in the crisis? What concerns, expectations, or demands did they have?
3. Crisis Response. How did the organization respond to the crisis? Did it seem prepared for it? What strategies and tactics were used? Quote or paraphrase organization’s statements to demonstrate response strategies. Which communication methods did organization use to reach out to the key stakeholders?
4. Recommendations. Analyze effective and ineffective elements in the organization’s response to the crisis. Did it follow best practices and guidelines from the course videos, lectures, and readings? Make concrete recommendations how the organization could have improved its crisis response and restored its reputation. Is there a lesson to be learned from this crisis? Was it possible to prevent it from happening in the first place?
