Exploring Principles for Culturally Competent Practice with Displaced Populations: A Global Perspective

A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
Asking clients how they view themselves—in terms of ethnicity, race, national origin, and other dimensions of diversity—is a culturally humble and appropriate act. So, too, is learning more about a given population through research.
Evidence-based social work, as you recall, involves surveying the literature for the best available information on a particular practice issue and combining that with professional expertise and client preferences to make an educated decision. This same approach can be used in the context of diversity and culturally competent practice. Social work research has been conducted on many different global populations, and the evidence there can be used to guide practice. Remember, though, that there is no “one size fits all” technique for working with specific groups. These research findings must be tempered with the unique circumstances, characteristics, and wishes of a client.
For this Journal, you read peer-reviewed research articles on a global population of your choosing. Then you extract two principles to inform your practice with this population.
To prepare:
Reflect on what you learned about the global and displaced populations identified in this week’s Discussion. Select one population to further research.
Search in the Walden Library for at least two peer-reviewed research articles related to this population.
Submit a 1- to 2-page written journal  in which you:
Identify the population you have selected.
Based on the two peer-reviewed research articles you found, identify and explain two principles to guide ongoing practice with this population.
Describe how your research into this population has informed you as a culturally competent social worker.
Use the Learning Resources and at least two peer-reviewed research articles to support your thinking. Make sure to provide APA citations and a reference list.

Title: Capstone Project Product Proposal: Addressing Trauma in Children and Adolescents

I HAVE NOT CHOSEN A TOPIC AREA SO FEEL FREE TO DO SO. I WORK WITH CHILDREN AGED 2-18 WHO HAVE DEALT WITH TRAUMA.
The Capstone Project (CP) Product Proposal is a tool for students, instructors/mentors, and the program to assess progress, planning, and execution of the Capstone in its entirety.  Concentration year students will engage in an iterative process via various writing assignments throughout Colloquium I to complete the CP Product Proposal. This iterative process aids students in articulating their ideas and plans for the Capstone project.
Completion of this proposal at the end of the Summer session is an indication of the student’s commitment to ongoing engagement in the DSW program and the completion of the CP requirement.  The final CP Product Proposal will be submitted, graded, and approved in Colloquium I.  Approval of the Capstone Project Product Proposal denotes that the student has transitioned from DSW Student to DSW Candidate.
Instructions:  Overview of the Scholarship Agenda
In two to three pages, provide an introduction/overview of your Capstone project.  Succinctly describe your state purpose that will thread your three products together.
Consider the following questions:
Introduce your topic area.  Why is it important to the social work profession? How does it connect to your concentration area? Is there a practice problem/challenge connected to your topic area – if so, what is that challenge?
What are key terms that are related to your topic? Keep your reader and audience in mind – what key term definitions would be helpful in their understanding of your topic?
Develop foundational background, grounded in research, for your topic area.  What does your reader/audience need to know to understand your topic/purpose?  Do you know what theory you will apply to better understand your topic area – if so, discuss it in the background.
Conclusion/Transition paragraph to the remainder of your Capstone Proposal.
Tips:
Brainstorm an outline or use conceptual mapping to help you gather your ideas about your Capstone Project
Two to three pages is not long, which makes it imperative that you are clear, critical, and concise in your writing.
Use APA 7th edition formatting throughout the entire Capstone Product Outline, including in-text citations and references.  References are not included in the page count.

“Supporting New Immigrants: A Social Worker’s Role in Navigating Systems and Promoting Cultural Humility”

A CASE OF A NEW IMMIGRANT
Imagine that you are an immigrant arriving in a new country. Perhaps you are escaping persecution, famine, or war, or simply pursuing a better life. Perhaps you are detained at the border. You do not have any support networks in this new country, or if you do, they are distant relations. You do not know how the legal system works. You may not know the official language. What would you need? Where would you go?
Social workers are positioned to support new immigrants in their access to services, navigation of systems and policies, and mental and physical health. They must demonstrate cultural humility by, for example, integrating questions related to cultural formulation into their interviews and assessments.
In this Discussion, you research a global or displaced population and create a scenario in which a member of that population immigrates to the United States. You then respond to a colleague’s case scenario by describing how you would engage with the immigrant client as a social worker.
To prepare:
Review the American Psychiatric Association’s information on cultural formulation, as well as the Think Cultural Health video showing the cultural formulation interview in practice.
Identify and research a global or displaced population to focus on for this Discussion. Imagine that a member of this population immigrates to the United States. What strengths and challenges might they have? Develop a brief case scenario describing the immigrant’s experience.
Post your original case scenario involving a new immigrant to the United States. In your scenario:
Identify the country of origin, language(s) spoken, and any employment, housing, legal, or family concerns of the individual.(I’m from cuba )
Describe strengths and challenges related to their arrival and experience of American culture.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Single-Subject Design Study

The steps at the heart of single-subject research are part of the everyday practice of social work. Each day social workers implement interventions to meet clients’ needs and monitor results. However, conducting proper single-subject research entails far more than these simple day-to-day practices. Proper single-system research requires a high degree of knowledge and commitment. Social workers must fully understand the purpose and variations of the design. They must develop a hypothesis based upon research and select the right design for testing it. They must ensure the reliability and validity of the data to be collected and know how to properly analyze and evaluate that data.
In this Assignment, you devise a plan to evaluate the evidence-based intervention that you are applying with your chosen client. In particular, you must prepare to monitor progress using measures that can be evaluated in a single-subject research design. You must also draw from the research literature to set the context and need for the study.
Review the work you have done thus far in Weeks 1, 2, and 3 with your chosen client, namely the identified issue, evidence-based intervention, and single-subject design. You will use this work to develop a research plan for a single-subject design study on your client.
Scan through the provided single-subject design studies in the Learning Resources again to understand the typical structure.
Download the Single-Subject Design Template
from the Learning Resources and use it to complete this Assignment.
Submit a 4- to 5-page proposal/research plan for single-subject evaluation for your work with your chosen client. Identify the problem that you will target, the outcomes that you will measure, the evidence-based intervention, and the evaluation design. Include the following sections:
Introduction
Literature Review
Methodology
Setting and Intervention
Expected Results
Use the Learning Resources and peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles to support your paper. Make sure to include appropriate APA citations and a reference list.
