Change/and nursing theories are the framework used in conducting and implementing workplace changes and assessing the change based on human behavior and action. Improving the care provided to the patients requires implementing changes. Hence, knowing and differentiating nursing theories and the best fit is essential. The Lippitt change theory and Kurt Lewin change theories are the two theories of interest that have similarities and differences (Barrow et al., 2020).
One fundamental similarity between the two theories is that they are both goal-oriented and rely on change agents to implement the change and ensure that it is sustained to avoid returning to the status quo (Barrow et al., 2020). Another key similarity is that both change theories are based on inspiration and motivation to effect and implement the change, including the ability of the organization to implement the change (Barrow et al., 2020). Despite these critical similarities, they have differences.
One key difference is that Lewin’s change theories comprise three stages: unfreezing, change, and refreezing. On the other hand, Lippitt’s change theory consists of seven stages. However, it is a modification of Lewin’s change theory. Another difference is that while Lewin’s change theory focuses on three forces influencing the change, the Lippitt change theory focuses on the change’s direction. Also, while the Lewin change theory effectiveness is at point equilibrium, the Lippitt change theory occurs in all aspects of the system. Furthermore, while the Lewin change theory depends on the internal system, the Lippitt change theory relies on external factors to effect the change (Barrow et al., 2020).
After analyzing the two change theories, I found that the Lewin change theory makes the most sense. It indicates the different forces that could promote or hinder change. Also, the Lewin change is simplified and helps identify the problem quickly. The Lewin change theory has a higher acceptance rate because it begins from within the system (Tuyet et al., 2020). The feedback from my preceptor indicates he had used the Lewin change theory and the Lippitt change theory, and he valued the Lewin change theory more than the Lippitt change theory. Also, my preceptor identifies more with the Lewin theory because of its simplicity (Barrow et al., 2020).
