Answer all of the following questions:
This writing assignment mainly asks you to demonstrate your sensitivity to the tension between structural constraints and human agency in the media world. To be specific, you need to describe how and where the pair (structural constraints and human agency) unfold its tension through the film’s narrative. Furthermore, you must demonstrate your understanding of the dialectical relationship between the economic base and the superstructure. To be specific, how and where does the film reveal the preponderance of economic base, i.e., the capitalist mode of production and the concentration of ownership, over the superstructure? How and where does the film reveal the superstructure’s counteraction, i.e., the law, the social consciousness, political institutions, religion, arts, etc., against the economic base?
Based on the film’s storyline, how do you understand that nearly all economic decisions in the media industry are actually political? Specifically, you must demonstrate your sensitivity to the interlocking relationship between economics and politics in the media industry. Ask yourself, who benefits the most from the marketplace decision, and what’s the political consequence of that decision? How could it be that a marketplace decision is actually a political decision?
At the beginning of the essay, summarize (with 100 words) the major conflicts and controversies among the major characters. Remember the connection between “private troubles” and “public issues.” Conflict is not simply the clash between/among personalities. Use the “sociological imagination” recommended by C.W. Milles to transmute the individual-level conflict to the broader tension between structural constraint and human agency.
Based on these stories in the film, how does the media industry strangle our democracy and degrade our civilization?
What are the ethical issues involved in these conflicts? Dishonesty? Privacy infringement? Conflict of interests? Breach of confidentiality? Undue influence of advertisement? Antisocial behavior? Offensive content? Sensationalism? Stereotype?… You need to identify only one or two of those ethical issues for elaboration.
Those stories happened in the 1950s and 1970s. Do those narratives still hold true (or more true) in today’s media world? Are the media behaving better or worse?
